Synopsis

Goal of Sust-Enable: to provide effective practical facts and intellectual tools, along with philosophical support, to encourage individuals to take on the problem of environmental change immediately and with their full agency.

In the summer of 2008, a 21-year-old woman, just graduated from college, will give up her apartment, job, and other typical amenities in a bold attempt to live with a sustainable ecological footprint.

Have you ever heard the phrase "If everyone lived the way the average American does, we would need five Earths to sustain us?" This is basically true for our protagonist, Caroline, and her quest is to reduce her footprint to needing just one Earth. While remaining in the context of urban Pittsburgh, she will attempt to find ways to meet her needs--which include, among other things: food, shelter, hygiene, and meaningful activity--while spending little to no money whatsoever. Through it all, in addition to offering practical knowledge about how any person can incorporate sustainable technology and lifestyle practices into their lives today, she will offer the opinion of an embedded journalist: are her efforts worthwhile? Does she feel satisfied, comfortable, safe, and happy, like she did when she lived as a typical American? By the end of July, she will have the answers!

Her story will be broken up into "episodes", shot/edited at locations around Pittsburgh between May and August of 2008. These episodes are oriented topically, in contrast with her blog which tells a day-by-day account of her struggle to meet the goal of 100% sustainability each day. There will be an estimated 1.5-month delay between when an episode has finished shooting, and when it will become available online.
